# At Home With Madame Chic # chat with me

Chat with Me | Beach Edition | Vale do Lobo

Take a walk with me on the beach and have a chat! In this video, I update you on how homeschooling is going, what our daily routine is in Portugal and the unusual things I have been missing while traveling abroad. We are actually in England right now, but I hope you enjoy seeing these videos from our Portugal trip.

This video was shot on the DJI Gimbal Osmo video recorder. I'm still learning how to use this device so bear with me as I try to walk in the thick sand, talk and film at the same time. Ha!

I hope you enjoy today's video.

Miss Jennifer,

Firstly, thank you for being so open and honest with us as well as for your encouragement to strive for depth (become daily connoisseurs) in our own lives.

I don't think I have commented since your tea time adulting video though I have started to several times. My initial reaction to that video was, but what about those of us with illnesses who literally can't sometimes? And after mulling it over, I realized that you weren't speaking to that at all! That the issue is with glorifying irresponsibility and laziness. It is good, and enough, to do my best in each individual day.

My husband and I have been talking lately about the importance and value of the little things in life. It is a topic we come back to often. Most recently he came across the phrase, "Mind your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves." I think this can apply to so much more than simply money, time for instance. You spoke in this video about how you feel you need to get up before your family because of how it allows you to take care of yourself and them without feeling frantic/rushed in the morning. I think that is one of the little things in life. Just because something is little, doesn't make it easy, and doesn't make it unimportant. I personally cannot remember the last time I got up before my family, my current routine involves being dragged from sleep to wake
fullness by a grumpy baby and a grumpy toddler who are hungry and know they must cajole me to a cup of coffee so that I can feed them. My husband is long awake and gone for work by that point. This morning I've resolved, that for the coming week I will mind my minutes and not wallow in the feeling that I have too few hours. I will attempt to emulate Madam Chic and rise before my family in order to better facilitate the day.

You said in your video that, "blogging is not for the faint of heart." I myself was thinking after your video on Monday that, I don't know how you do it! But I am glad that you do. Thank you so much for consistently inspiring me to be a connoisseur of daily life; it means more than you know.

Sincerely, Kathleen

I look forward to your videos and always enjoy them. I've never understood those who would spend time watching videos such as yours only to comment as naysayers. You do a great job with your videos and I know that your community loves and appreciates all you do. I feel fortunate that I get to tag along via video. ❤️

P.s.

When I travel, it is typically with family either mine or my husband's. What I miss most about regular life is being a nuclear family. It is nice to have a break from making dinner and doing the dishes, but like you said, there's something wonderful about having your own home and taking care of it how you want to.

I rarely leave comments, but I want you to know that I eagerly await each blog post and have been reading your blog since I read your first book. I own and have read all of your books and have given them as gifts often. I admire your willingness to share your personal life, but understand how there are negative forces out there that make you wonder if it is worth it. You are an inspiration and kindred spirit even though you are much younger than me. It is a hard lesson to learn, but you cannot please everyone, unless you never express an opinion. Why some feel the need to comment negatively instead of just reading something else, I can't say, but there is a much larger audience who really enjoys your posts and would be disappointed if you quit. Please just "shake it off" and be "you", and let them go be" them" somewhere else. To each his own.

Jennifer, I didn't comment on any of the recent posts, but I'll say a few bits now. Please don't stop blogging. You inspire many, including me. I am just about as different from you as one could be in many ways. I am Childfree, religion free, and anti current media culture. I am also sick to death of the millennial whine. I am not in favor of homeschooling, only because I was homeschooled and it was used as a new form of abuse by my already abusive mother. I had no choices and no control over it. I trust you, in that I know you are doing it for a real reason and that you are self aware enough to do it for the right reasons. And I know you truly care about your kids and their development. I thought the current wardrobe was different from your past ones, but I know your life is different now than when I first started following you. Times change. People change. You still look more pulled together than most of the monster mommies I know. And the best part about you is your personal grace and style and confidence. Keep it up please. I enjoy your work, even though I don't share much in common with you. And that's ok, we are all different. I am ok with that too. Much love.

Don't quit your posts, ever!  I love them and as an example, your video today on enjoying your daily routines at home, inspires me and so many others, reminding me of the treasured simplicity of life, showing what's important to you along with the values that are our "every day life."  Hearing about your morning routine and the home schooling is fascinating to me as a retired person who worked in college marketing and public relations.  I love every detail, including what you have for breakfast!  In fact, with your recent post on classical music and your older videos that came before, your beautiful additions of music to your videos, which take great thought and enormous time and effort, add so much to the viewers' enjoyment.  Even this aspect of your videos planted a seed a few years ago when I found you and today I enjoy classical music more than ever and I am attending a classical music concert with Ludovico Einaudi at Segerstrom Concert Hall tonight.  So, Jennifer, your "fine art of living" is touching many in countless ways.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I always look forward to your next video.

I needed that beach! Thank you for sharing. When our kids were in grade school it became clear we needed to intervene their education. We hadn't planned to homeschool and did so only out of necessity. I cannot express just how much I enjoyed watching our children learn and grow during those years. Sure it required some sacrifice, patience, and perseverance, but I miss that time with them immensely. They are currently attending our local high school and doing fabulously well.

Jennifer,
I’ve been following your blog for a very long time. I can remember when you did the blog post series on 20 things you learned from Madame Chic. Someone suggested you should expand them into a book and we all chimed in with encouragement. I can’t believe all that you’ve accomplished since then. When people criticize you, I’m a bit dumbfounded because in all this time you’ve never said anything i disagreed with. I’m glad that your naysayers are smaller in number than your supporters. I know blogging is a lot of work and don’t know how you manage to fit everything into a day but I selfishly hope you keep writing for a long time. If you stopped, i would certainly miss it. I do feel like you have brought together a great community of like-minded people and that gives me hope for the future. You’ve had a great influence on many people by sharing your ideas about lifestyle. Thank you for sharing your travels with us too. Hope you’ll enjoy your weeks in England!

Hi Jennifer,

I've really enjoyed this video as well as your vacation house tour; thanks for letting us have a peek into your family life in Portugal. Also, please don't quit the blog! :) You are such an inspiration and a bright spot on the internet.

Something you said in this video made me pause and want to ask you a question. You mentioned you and your baby cleaning/tidying up. I'd love to learn more about how you manage to do this with your baby! Ha! As I've shared previously, my son is just a couple of months younger than yours, and I find doing housework and tidying to be rather challenging when we're together. I've been putting off such tasks for nap time. My son is in this phase where he loves opening any drawer or cabinet that he can (we do have everything in the kitchen secured) and transporting items he finds all over the house, and he loves taking all of the books out of his bookshelf. While it's adorable and so funny, it makes tidying and housework such a challenge. What suggestions/solutions do you have for tidying with baby?

Take good care and enjoy England!

The sound of the waves was so relaxing to listen to while you talked. I feel like I got a mini vacation! I also realized that it helped relieve some of my tension. Thank you! I love the piano music that was playing, what is it called?

I miss my cup of tea the way I make it in the right sized mug and my favorite mugs. And my bed.

Jennifer, your critics have given you the gift of the opportunity where you have demonstrated the principle that real poise is where you respond with grace to criticism and negativity and continue on your path with the courage of your convictions.
You can be assured there are many who wish to sincerely offer you encouragement.

Dear Jennifer, please don't quit!!! At least, not for the critics. Thank you for being so dedicated to us, your readers and followers. In my daily life, your videos and blogs are a respite, but also a refreshment. You are encouraging and down-to-earth, an oasis in the dry, dry desert that is the Internet.

These travel videos are such a treat. They're a window into your travels and life, and now Portugal is on our travel bucket list!

I was wondering if you'd consider doing a 10-item wardrobe on sleepwear.

Finally, I want to tell you about an audiobook that we recently discovered. My kids often listen to audiobooks because we are part of a homeschool book club. They sit around the table and color while they listen (sometimes I color too). Between books, I wanted them to learn Bible stories, and I discovered John Le Mesurier's Bedtime Bible Stories. There are two volumes, both available on Spotify, which is how we listened. His British tenor of a voice has captivated the entire family, from our three-year-old daughter to my 42-year-old husband.

This is what I miss when I travel: my own house. But the adventure is always worth it.

Happy trails to Famille Connoisseur!

I'd like to echo the sentiments already expressed: reading your blog and watching your videos is a joy! You always make me think, and you've had a great impact on my life. I also wanted to share a bit of advice I heard yesterday (on the most recent podcast episode from The Minimalists): Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from. That has helped me reframe my thoughts already!

How beautiful you look in white. Such a stunning environment. Homeschooling was a wonderful experience for my children and I as well. My youngest turns 18 this weekend and is a dual-credit student at university. Homeschooling has allowed him to be a sophomore in college and a senior in high school all at the same time.
When we travel, I seem to gravitate to a domestic schedule. It is the only time I can Be leasurely and mindful as well as feminine and domestic. There is no pressure of 'musts' so I do my best hair styles and try new ingredients and recipes. I usually generate so many left overs we meet our 'travel' neighbors attempting to unload our bounty.
Enjoy. Thank you for taking me along. Until next time, T

What a lovely walk we had together! Thank you.
I'm so happy to hear of your positive experiences homeschooling. Those were some of the best days of my life.

I can relate to wanting to get back to the "holy rut" of home life after spending time away. I always miss making my own cup of coffee (a pour over). I prefer it so much that I often take it with me! God bless your family as you continue to explore the world!

Jennifer, from following your Blog for so long (though commenting infrequently), your sense of self, your love of beauty in all its forms, good manners and, in particular, your love and concern for your family, but also the other citizens of this world we share is the "Breath of Fresh Air," your Blog followers needed...still need more than ever. Your presence on the Internet, through your Blog, allows me to know that there are still those of us who value the characteristics I mentioned above. Thus "All is Not Lost," not yet...as long as there are strong voices and examples such as yours still out there in the world.

I follow several blogs that I enjoy, but "The Daily Connoisseur" is unlike any other Blog out there. It's always entertaining, but most often your topics are also thought provoking, not something you view and promptly forget. Instead, something to consider and find oneself thinking about all day long; very often for days and weeks afterward.

As for Trolls, Jan Blazjewaki (10-12-17) said it very well: "Please just shake it off and be you and let them go be 'them' somewhere else".

I hope you can hang in there, Jennifer. We need you!

-Patricia Wilson

I guess, if you are tired and if you feel that blogging does not fit the place where you are right now in your life, or the goals you are pursuing, you definitely shall consider your best interests first. I am flattered and grateful that you love me (and other readers), and I feel pretty much the same, otherwise I would not return weak by weak, but do not let this to stop you from doing what is right right now. You can not live your life for others - that is martyr-ism and being a martyr is not chick -

Love, courage and best-est luck!

I almost cried when you were speaking about the community of strong women who are together due to your work. I love your blog and books so much! I look around at home and my life at different moments in the week and see how you've inspired some of the better bits of it and how there is more pleasure and cheeriness in my day to day life because of your work! I, in fact, do feel strong :) thank you for caring so much to do work that is so appreciated and for having an amazing heart :)

While traveling I miss routine. I tend to over eat because of the chaos I feel from not having a routine from traveling. Oh and I miss having an easy access to a washing machine haha

Be encouraged Jennifer. Your blog and YouTube channel are such a rare, sweet, and tasteful delight. So different from much of what is on the internet. I know many would really miss you, and miss your message, if you were not blogging. Thank you for encouraging us to be better people.

Jennifer, you have such an impact on women all over the world through your books and your blog and youtube videos. I enjoy the content of all three immensely. You are a positive force for civility and culture and I selfishly hope you will continue your efforts for making the world a more chic place to live! Blessing to you and your family.
What I miss most about my home when traveling is a decent washing machine! Thank you for sharing your travels with us. It is like having a mini relaxing vacation.

Jennifer,

As I'm writing this i am again evacuated from my home in Northern California. The same thing happened two years ago. Our home is in danger from the wildfires. 14 families from my daughter's school have already lost their homes. I know at least half of these families personally. Your beach chat was a welcome distraction from my anxiety and grief. And I would like to say that I now have a different attitude toward housekeeping. Home keeping is a privilege not a chore. About homeschooling, if my children's schools don't reopen soon, we may be homeschooling again too. I love you too, Jennifer. Thanks for being your generous self!!
Warm best,
Alexandra

Although I rarely comment, I have been following since 2012 and own all your books. I always appreciate your thoughtful and well-meaning messages, and they inspire me to make my own unique place in this world a little bit nicer than it was yesterday. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to put your life out there for the world to see, and I hope that you will continue to share in some capacity. I am enjoying living through your family's travels - you have nudged Portugal closer to the top of my travel list! What a special season in your family's life.

I was fortunate to travel to France for my birthday recently with my husband and daughter. An unusual thing I missed was my nightly cup of tea! Although we had apartments and I could have made tea, we were so busy and out so late that I never did.

P.S. I love the simple white tee!

Don't worry, I have no plans to leave any time soon. Thank you to all of you. I pray you are safe in the wildfires if you are in that area. Alexandra, your comment made comment of the week on the next post. Thank you!
